Professor Dr Arup Ratan Choudhury awarded FDSRCS, England, Fellowship in Dental Surgery from The Royal College of Surgeons of England–by- Election in recognition of the enormous contribution made for the profession-2012
Dr Arup Ratan Choudhury is an exceptional achiever, specialist dental surgeon, humanist, media compare as well as a noted singer of Bangladesh. Who has devoted his life to the service of mankind, was born in 1952. He has shown a remarkable contribution in management of medically compromised patients and scientific research during the last 25 years .As a scientist-cum singer, Dr Arup Ratan Choudhury splits his time in the USA between studying periodontal disease in Diabetics and singing the works of famed Bengali author and Nobel poet laureate Rabindranath Tagore during 1992-1993.
Dr Choudury is a versatile genius and one of the popular television Radio performer and presenter of health education program and a professional singer in Bangladesh since 1971 and frequently appears on Bengali television and radio programs. He has made his mark in the society by combining professional zeal with social reform movements and has become a noted personality in the field of music, Dental science and social activism. The most remarkable and tremendous achievement of Dr AR Choudhury is receiving the International Award from World Health Organization (WHO) –“Tobacco or Health “ Medal in recognition of his concept of Tobacco free Society. He has been selected “Man of the Year-2000” by the “American Biographical Institute” on his outstanding accomplishment to date and the noble example he has set for his peer and entire community. He obtained BDS from Dhaka University, Fellowship from London University (WHO, England) in Dental public health in 1982-83, and PhD from Dhaka University in Dentistry and nutrition –2000, research Fellowship in Dentistry from State University of New-York at Stony-Brook, USA-1992-93.
Apart from his professional activities some of his performance in a lead starring or critical role for organization or establishment with distinguished reputations. As a starring –Performed songs of novel laureate poet Rabindra Nath Tagore in the Bengali community during his visit in UK and USA and part of Asia. He has released two volumes of CD and audio cassettes on his work on Tagore song and another new CD is coming very soon in the market .He is regularly presenting songs in the national medias like Television and Radio and enlisted as Special Grade Singer in Bangladesh National Broadcasting media and private TV channel and Radio
Dr. ArupRatan choudhury is one of the pioneers in Bangladesh for anti – tobacco movement. His contribution for raising public awareness on consequences and hazards for using tobacco , mobilizing policy maker for enacting a law by the Government of Bangladesh for tobacco control , and to establish a drug free society are noteworthy . Versatile , charismatic characteristics and innovators Dr. Choudhury wrote scripts and directed two short films ( Nesha Sarbonasha – Dangers of Addiction ; and Srinkholay Jibon- Discipline is Life ) on dangers of tobacco use and related disease like, diabetes, hypertension and heart , and cancer. With the financial assistance of Ministry of Home Affairs, these two films are airing on different television channels (public and private) regularly, which has been created mass awareness.
Dr. Choudhury is also a member of the National Drug Control Board, and has been playing an active role in the prevention of drug abuse. He started his activities initially for Dhaka and later on, eventually extended the anti-tobacco campaign throughout Bangladesh. He also the founder –President of ‘MANAS’ – organization established in 1989, which works for fight against drug abuse , and implementing prevention programs through educational institutions and Media .
There is a little scope as a dentist to reach mass population for sharing information on health and education. But Dr. Choudhury as a dentist has made significant contribution in disseminating messages by organizing health education programs through media like television , radio and newspapers that sensitized and motivated people on against tobacco use , and created a public sentiment in ‘giving up smoking for a healthy life`.
It may be mentioned here that with his personal initiatives and efforts 200 schools and colleges are now named as ‘Smoke Free Institutions`. In his flawless efforts to fight against tobacco and drug abuse, Dr, Choudhury wrote11books on related subjects. These books were distributed in different institutions, organizations in Bangladesh through Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs.
He dreams to build a network to work on anti tobacco activities and prevention of drug abuse in Bangladesh, in order to save future generation from the deadly diseases like cancer and heart diseases.
He was awarded “Ekushe Podok” the highest national award in Bangladesh for his outstanding contribution in social work
